For Dissident II, we collaborated with powerhouse athletes, Loïc Bruni and Finn Iles, to design a helmet that would meet the highest demands of downhill mountain bike racing, in terms of confidence, a modern-styled fit, and breathability.With five strategically placed EPS foam inserts, we’re able to tune for higher and lower density foam based on where it is being configured inside the helmet—allowing us to maintain a light weight and still manage energy. The use of a softer foam density allows more energy to be absorbed in an impact, transferring less to the rider. Dissident II also provides added confidence through its Mips Evolve Solution—that helps to redirect rotational movement away from the head. Then, we took our two highest-performing shapes from CFD testing and brought them into the Win Tunnel for validation to confirm which shape reigns supreme. To test the Propero 4 against our S-Works Prevail 3 in the Win Tunnel, we placed our male road race mannequin, molded from 3D scans of Specialized riders, in a stationary set-up. From there, we ran a range of different yaw angles (wind angles) to capture the range a cyclist is likely to experience. Next, we feed the drag at each wind angle into our simulations to show how the helmet performs over realistic wind conditions on the road. Our time in the Win Tunnel validated that the Propero 4 is four watts faster than our S-Works Prevail 3, which adds up to 15 seconds faster over 40km, at an average speed of 45 kph. Ventilation Drawing inspiration from our world-renowned S-Works Prevail 3, ventilation was a focal point in our quest for a well-balanced helmet. Although the Prevail 3 boasts a unique design, we couldn't ignore its effective rear vent layout, which we incorporated into the Propero 4. We utilized CFD insights derived from both the S-Works Prevail 3 and S-Works Evade 3, and leveraged these learnings to amplify the cooling efficiency of the Propero 4, resulting in a helmet that breathes in more ways than one.
